Offer highlights:

  • Four stars from Time Out, The Independent, The Telegraph and the Financial Times suggests Ibsen would forgive the title change of his play 'An Enemy of the People'.
  • ‘A production from director Richard Jones is never without a great deal of energy, visual interest, and a bit of a twist,’ says The Guardian.
  • The closest Ibsen came to comedy and 'a tale of corruption, greed and the responsibility of the press,' says The Independent, infers the timelessness of this piece.

More details

'Dr Thomas Stockmann’s home is a riot of orange wallpaper, stripped pine and Scandinavian knitwear, and journalists on the crusading local newspaper have a poster of Mickey Mouse waving a hammer and sickle next to the words: “You won’t fool the children of the revolution” – a quotation not from Marx but from Marc Bolan’s T Rex.
It all helps make the play seem fresh, as does David Harrower’s punchy new translation...

Nick Fletcher’s long-haired beardie of a doctor has just the right mixture of innocence and messianic fervour, while Charlotte Randle as his wife harrowingly shows the personal cost to her family of her husband’s determination to stand alone,' says The Telegraph.

Dr Stockmann discovers that the public spa waters are contaminated and even though the spas have made him rich he proceeds to acknowledge the truth and expects gratitude and thanks on a heroic scale from the towns folk. Instead Stockmann becomes public enemy number one and even his twin brother chooses to censure the contamination reports. It shows 'everything wrong with modern politics, vested interests and government in general' say our critics as Stockmann is lambasted every step of the way.

An Ibsen ‘comedy’ masterpiece - at half the original price - could split governments.
