More details:

Whether you’re a classical music buff or a fan of movie soundtracks, this concert will strike a chord with you as the London Philharmonic Orchestra take on three beautifully distinctive pieces.

The first piece will be ‘Lontano’ from, arguably, the greatest Hungarian composer, György Ligeti. To any film buff, the tense 1967 composition may be recognised from its appearance in films such as ‘The Shining’, ‘Shutter Island’ and ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’.

The second will be Witold Lutosławski’s ‘Cello Concerto’; a dark and intense piece with an earthy realism and spirit that earned the Polish composer international recognition.

The finale takes form in Alfred Schnittke’s ‘Symphony No. 1’. For Alfred Schnittke, ‘incidental’ and ‘serious’ music were one and the same. While working on his first symphony, Schnittke was also scoring the film ‘The World Today’. This juxtaposition of composition styles drifted into one rendering Schnittke as a unique and vital symphonic voice for the coming multimedia age.
